11-11 Data Literacy Project

Before Class:

- Read the UGA Data Literacy Requirement proposal draft.

- Check your grade of the Computational Thinking project on eLC. (You still need to post the lesson plan to your own portfolio page, if you haven't done so.)

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is asking the right questions about a subject in order to make informed decisions. (YouTube video)

Data Literacy

You must have heard about different types of "literacy", but what is data literacy? According to the UGA Data Literacy Requirement proposal draft, "A data literate graduate of UGA is competent in the ethical use and interpretation of data, has the ability to communicate data-based insights, and understands the role of data in society." Do you see the connection with critical thinking?

Think about what data literacy means to you. In what areas of your life is this really important? What more do you need to know to consider yourself “data literate”? What do your peers need to know?

Data Literacy Project

Make a new "Data Literacy" course with a group of three students (one group will be two students). What would your course look like - what do you want students in your class to be able to do in relation to data literacy? Think of it like an FYO rather than a 3-hour upper level course. What might the syllabus that serves as a framework for your selected activities look like? We'll take some time to brainstorm ideas for the new courses:

  • Come up with a title for your course.

  • Think of the learning objectives of your course. You may develop your learning objectives from those listed in the UGA Data Literacy Requirement proposal draft.

  • Brainstorm activity ideas that relate to one or more of the learning objectives. (What would you want as a student in this course? What types of activities would you want to complete to meet the learning objectives? )

Here’s the Syllabus Template. Copy it and share it with your group members. You can use syllabi from other courses to help you with the format. You can even browse syllabi from every course taught at the University here.
