Grand Document for EDIT 9990
Our final assignment of EDIT 9990 Foundations of LDT was a grand document which includes an introduction to a research topic of my interest, introduction to two scholars that are important to this topic and LDT in general, and theories supporting the research. My topic is "Project-Based Language Learning in the Context of Secondary Schools in China", which is also the same topic for the Design Studio class but with a different focus. Relevant theories are Project-Based Learning and Cognitive Load Theory. Accordingly, the scholars introduced here are John Dewey and John Sweller.
At this point, I am trying to think about the debate between constructivist pedagogy and directed instruction. I tended to think these two theory are compatible to some extend and they have their position in different contexts. In Project-Based Learning, or collaborative learning in general, constructivist approach is still the core while Cognitive Load Theory could help in more local aspects. Later on, although I gave up the PBL topic, I continue to learn more about both theories to look for deeper insights as to how to promote collaborative learning in group interactions, especially in a technology-based learning environment.
