01-22 Tool Commercial Project and UDL

Tool Commercial Project (DUE 01-21, Friday)

Sign up for the Tool Commercial Project, if you haven't done so yet. After exploring the tool of your choice for two weeks (starting from last Friday), you will share your tool with the class. Pay attention to these aspects of your tool:

  • Cost (if it is free or has a free trial; if not, what is the price?)

  • Difficulty level (if it is user-friendly or easy to use)

  • Accessibility (how to access it, what devices it is compatible with)

  • Main features (be prepared to demonstrate how to use it)

  • Integration for teaching (what age level it is appropriate for; how to integrate it into classrooms; give us an example)

  • Other aspects that you think are important to know.

You can choose your own creative form of your final product for this project. And whatever form it is, you should cover the key aspects listed above. Possible forms are:

  • Blog style - A written description of the tool with texts, images and other elements, just like blogs.

  • Poster - Design a poster for your tool on paper or digitally (for example on canva.com).

  • Video - Make a cool video to introduce your tool. Talk with me if you need help with what video creation tools are good to use for your purpose.

  • Other - talk with me if you have other creative ideas.

Your project will be added to your portfolio site on a new page named "Tool Commercial Project". You are going to share it in the form of a "Tools Fair", not a very formal presentation. So you don't have to create slides for it. Important timeline:

  • 01/31, Friday, before class - Your final product should be available on your portfolio website.

  • 02/03, Monday - Tools Fair (sharing your tool with others).

Meaningful learning examples

Today we'll start our class sharing the meaningful learning examples you have experienced. Using the 5 characteristics diagram (active, intentional, authentic, cooperative), take a few minutes to write down what examples of meaningful learning with (and without) technology you have experienced since our last class.

Then share what you wrote within your group and discuss your understanding of those examples using the 5 characteristics of meaningful learning. And get ready to share with the class

Universal Design for Learning (UDL Chart)

What is your biggest takeaway from this chapter Universal design for learning.?

Now let's watch a video to refresh what we have read about UDL: what is UDL all about?

  • Multiple Means of Engagement

  • Multiple Means of Representation

  • Multiple Means of Action and Expression

All learners are unique. One size does not fit all.

A note about learning styles: You must have heard about different learning styles, such as visual , auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Have you ever wondered if this is true?

HOMEWORK (Due Friday, January 24):

1. Watch youtube video Learning Styles Don't Exist.(6 minutes). Or if you have time, watch this 15-minute TED talk Learning Styles & the Importance of Critical Self-Reflection.

2. Search the internet for specific UDL examples and share them in this UDL Google doc. It could be a video, a blog post, a news report, or a research article, etc.

3. Start your Tools Commercial Project.
