01-27 Creativity

Check-in with the Tool Commercial Project

What is your progress? Have you come across any difficulties? Do you have any questions?

Pair and Share

As part of your homework, you have read one of the Decade in Review articles. Now pair up with a classmate to share what you have learned from your reading with each other.

Wrap Up Foundations

So far we have explored three foundation readings of this course. We'll start to connect our 3 big numbers for the semester:

  • 3 Principles of Universal Design for Learning

  • 5 Characteristics of Meaningful Learning

  • 7 ISTE Standards

What Is Creativity?

You have given wonderful responses to this question. Here is a word cloud based on your responses.

Creativity in my own words is someone expressing their individualism by doing something that is only specific to them. It can also be described as someone branching out from the norm and doing something out of the ordinary.
Creativity is a persons ability to think outside the box to make something unique and original.
creating new innovation into life.
Creativity is the ability to develop unique ideas and use them to come up with new products, artworks, and music pieces.
The use of imagination in your work
Unique ideas and thoughts to solve problems or express ideas
To me, creativity is expressing something through imaginative, non-traditional ways.

Now let's review what the foundation readings say about creativity:

1. ISTE Standards: Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. Students:

  • a. know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.

  • b. select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and calculated risks.

  • c. develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.

  • d. exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance

  • a. Think Creatively: Use a wide range of idea creation techniques; Create new and worthwhile ideas; Elaborate, refine, analyze, and evaluate original ideas to improve and maximize creative efforts.

  • b. Work Creatively with Others: Develop, implement, and communicate new ideas to others effectively; Be open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives; incorporate group input and feedback into the work; Demonstrate originality and inventiveness in work and understand the real world limits to adopting new ideas; View failure as an opportunity to learn; understand that creativity and innovation are part of a long-term, cyclical process of small successes and frequent mistakes.

  • c. Implement Innovation: Act on creative ideas to make a tangible and useful contribution to the field in which the innovation will occur.

3. Meaningful Learning: Creativity is not one of five characteristics, which are used to describe meaningful tasks. But it does have a whole chapter called "design with technology-creative knowledge constructor."

4. UDL: Creativity is not explicitly stated there, but teachers are encouraged to shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach to more creative and flexible teaching and learning methods.

How Are You Creative?

Last semester, I asked this question a little bit differently: "How creative are you?" Most of the responses I got were "I'm not very creative" except a few artistic students who were confident enough to say that they were creative. This time, I tweaked the question as "How are you creative?" And I got amazing answers.

I am creative when I create projects in class, I add pictures of my life
I am creative in that I try my best to think of fun and different ways of doing things.
I am able to show my creativity in a classroom through my writing skills... I am able to express myself through my writing and love getting to put my own opinions into it
I can be creative when asked to explain a topic of something I'm familiar with. For example, if someone were to ask me how to play volleyball, I could come up with different ways to show them.
I am creative when it comes to planning and organizing. I like to think about different ways organize my schedule so I am able to fit in everything I need to do.
I am creative through my extra-curriculars. I dance and do musicals, so I get to be creative through fine arts.

Creative Confidence

Everyone is creative in their own unique way.

As one of you said, everyone is creative. And we should all be confident about that. Creativity is not some talent that you are born with. It is an ability that you can learn and improve.

HOMEWORK (Before next class):

1. Watch this TED talk video about "Creative Confidence" and rethink what is creativity.

2. Read Unconventional wisdom about the maker movement (Pages 6-10).Stager, G. (2017). District Administration, Special report.

3. Tool commercial project (Due Friday, Jan 31st).
