02/02 Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

1. House Keeping

- Tool Commercial Project: sign up here, if you haven't done so.

  • What is your progress?

  • Any questions or challenges?

- Textbook Navigation: (I'll demonstrate it, but there is also a more detailed video about how to use the book on the webpage where you downloaded the book. You can find the link to that webpage in your email.)

2. Debrief FlipGrid Discussion

  • Many of you mentioned Top Hat.

  • From what you've watched, what examples of meaningful learning do you like most?

  • What questions do you still have about meaningful learning with technology?

3. UDL

You have read an ebook chapter about Universal Design for Learning (pp. 48-56). Here is a UDL chart that summarizes all the guidelines with specific suggestions.

  • Provide multiple means of engagement (Why)

  • Provide multiple means of representation (What)

  • Provide multiple means of action & expression (How)

The three principles of UDL can help us meet the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities inherent in the great variability of students, offering paths for those currently disenfranchised and developing the talents of all.

Now write about a success and a failure you had in a course last semester. What was the class, what was the content, what was it you were asked/expected to do? Was it a reading, a lecture, a quiz, a paper, a test, an individual project, a group project, an internship, etc.

Send these two scenarios to me in a direct Slack Message. We’ll spend some time sharing your successes and challenges and identifying which of the 3 Principles of UDL relate (you may refer to the UDL chart).

Homework

By midnight Friday, 02/05:

1. Compete your Tool Commercial Project and post it to your portfolio website.

By Tuesday, 02/09, before class:

2. Rewrite your challenge scenario (3% of final grade) – how might it have been different if one or more of the 3 principles of UDL had been considered? You’ll write it like a “day in the life” narrative – making sure to describe the course, the content, what you are being asked to do, and how you might accomplish the challenge taking UDL under consideration.

  • use the table of contents for your textbook (p. 4-8) to help with ideas for tools that might have better supported your learning and/or allowed for UDL considerations.

  • read the 3 classrooms scenarios in your textbook (p 26-28) to get some suggestions on how you might write your challenge scenario (although you are writing it from the student perspective)

  • Create a new page "UDL Redesign" on your portfolio. On this page, post your original challenge scenario and the redesigned scenario. Don't forget to publish the changes.
