02-26 Group Work Time (Q sort discussion)

Group Work time for 20 minutes

To make sure you have some group work time today, let's spend the first half of the class working in groups. Here is the Sign up sheet with requirements for the Computational Thinking group project.

Reminder: No class this Friday, Feb 28th. It's for you to meet your partners for the group project. I just need one of you to send me a group photo/video via Remind App to show that you are actually working together, which is worth 1 point of group score and due by Sunday, March 1st, at 10pm.

Q Sort Discussion

Thank you all for your participation in the Q sort activity. I combined Class A and Class B for the data analysis and found there were 5 distinct viewpoints on the frustrations in collaboration.

  • Factor 1: Gracyn H, Chandler B, Taylor Y, Chandler S, Kobe M, Warren B, Rian D

  • Factor 2a: Anthony S, Raelen W, Jordan D, Aubrey J, Emilee N

  • Factor 2b: Hadlee H, Vandan P

  • Factor 3: Travon W, Caroline L, Savannah B, Abby S, Anna S (Note: Travon and Anna are opposite to the rest of this group)

  • Factor 4: Madeleine B, Caroline H, Colin B, Warren M

Fore each group, I created an idealized Q sort, which represents the average person of your group. You will discuss the following questions based on your own Q sorts and the idealized Q sort of your group. I would like you to report the summary of your group discussion here.

  1. What similarities do your group share in terms of collaborative learning?

  2. What can be done to make collaborative learning experience more positive to you?

  3. How do you like the Q sort activity? What have learnt from it?

  4. Are there certain statements confusing or unnecessary? What are some other frustrations missing from the list of the statements?

  5. Come up with a name or slogan for your group and design a T-shirt.

Late Pass opportunity

If you would like to earn a late pass by volunteering for a 45-minute follow-up interview, please talk with me or email me. I have already got 6 volunteers. Thank you and I'll contact you soon.

Homework

1. No class this Friday, Feb 28th. It's for you to meet your partners for the group project. I just need one of you to send me a group photo/video via Remind App to show that you are actually working together, which is worth 1 point of group score and due by Sunday, March 1st, at 10pm.

2. From now until March 06, your homework is the Computational Thinking group project. Although you will have group work time in class, it is important that you continue to think about the coding problems you have met and look for solutions after class. You need to enhance your own coding skills by keeping practicing independently so that you are prepared to collaborate with your partners in class. Here are a few helpful strategies:

  • Search for solutions on Scratch Wiki;

  • Search for Youtube Tutorials.

  • Search for other Scratch projects and look at their coding to see how they solve similar problem.
