08/30 UDL

Before Class

- Sign-in sheet

- Share UDL examples in this Google doc.

1. A note about learning styles: Truth of Myth?

2. UDL examples

I have selected some examples shared by the class. You will decide which principle of UDL each example demonstrates. We will do this in a Kahoot. (Here is the UDL chart for your reference).

3. UDL redesign challenge

  • Write down (on paper or on computer) a failure in a course you experienced last semester. What was the class, what was the content, what was it you were asked/expected to do? Was it a reading, a lecture, a quiz, a paper, a test, an individual project, a group project, an internship, etc.

  • From the perspective of UDL, what principles of UDL would the failure be related to?

  • Rewrite your challenge scenario – how might it have been different if one or more of the 3 principles of UDL had been considered? (This will be a graded assignment. See HOMEWORK for more information about the requirements.)

4. Tool commercial project

  • You will choose a tool of your interest to explore for two weeks. After two weeks, you will share your tool with the class.

  • Based on the Tools Survey results, I have narrowed down the category of tools for you to choose from so that you won't be overwhelmed. Here is the Sign-up Sheet

  • As a class, we will decide together what we want to know about the tool. we'll do this with a poll: PollEv.com/xiguiyang972. (If don't have your computer with you, you can text XIGUIYANG972 to 37607 to join the poll.)

HOMEWORK (Due Wednesday, September 4th, before class)

1. Rewrite your challenge scenario – how might it have been different if one or more of the 3 principles of UDL had been considered?

  • Write it like a “day in the life” narrative.

  • Make sure to describe the course, the content, what you are being asked to do, and how you might accomplish the challenge taking UDL under consideration.

  • Think about what tools might have better supported your learning and/or allowed for UDL considerations.

  • Add a new page to your portfolio site and name it "UDL". Add your scenario to that page.

2. Sign up for the Tool commercial project and start to explore the tool you choose in the next two weeks. More logistic details will be provided later.
