09-09 Creativity

Before class:

- Check your grade for UDL assignment on eLC. Talk with me if there is any question about the grades.

1. Clarification about assignment submission

- I'm not strict about submitting assignment on time this time because I have expected some hiccups accessing your portfolio to grade for the first time. It has turned out to be true.

- For later assignment, late submission will affect your grade. If you submit on time, you will have opportunities to resubmit and get a better score if you don't get the full score the first time. However, if it is late, you will only get partial grades.

- If you have late passes, only one can be used for a late submission for up to 48 hours; another one can be used for one absence (beyond the no-penalty two absences); and another one to boost 1 point to your final grade.

- If you should be absent for any reason, check our course website to the class activities and homework and contact me to arrange a make-up plan for the assignment.

2. Important notes about adding a Google doc to your portfolio:

The best thing about inserting a Google doc directly to your portfolio is that changes made in Google Doc will be synchronized in your website automatically. However, you need to set the privacy setting of your Google doc as "anyone with the link can view". This is the same with other Google files.

3. The Creativity Q Sort results

The majority of the class share a similar viewpoint about creativity, but there are also some unique voices. Based on the statistical analysis, three factors emerged (three group of people with three different perspectives) :

Factor 1: Lily, Emma, Adelaide, Jenna (Group 1A)

Logan, Sarah, Kimberly, Birdie (Group 1B)

Mallory, Savannah, Karli (Group 1C)

Factor 2: George, Mike (Group 2)

Factor 3: Kristen, Nevada (Group 3)

There are some consensus statements, which means almost everyone sorted those statements in similar ways. You may see that most of them were rated as neutral. You all agree that being good at math is not necessarily being very creative.

4. Group Discussion: How are we alike?

You will be provided with an idealized sort for your factor, which is basically a synthesized average sort in a factor. Find your group above and get together to discuss the following questions:

  • How is your own Q sort similar / different from the the idealized sort? What were you thinking when sorting the statement?

  • Based on the idealized Q sort, what is the shared perspective on creativity among your factor? (Pay special attention to statements with highest and lowest values as well as those with distinguishing marks.)

  • What would be a good name / slogan for your factor?

  • Design a T-shirt for your factor (remember to include the name/slogan on the T-shirt).

5. Boost your creative confidence

- Watch this video first to get an idea of creative confidence.

- Do you need a late pass to excuse an absence or get more an extension for your projects? Here is an opportunity to earn a late pass - Creativity challenge. Here are a few ideas about how to boost your creative confidence by practicing creativity in daily life:

  • Do things differently than you normally do. For example, sit at a different spot in class, cook your food differently, take a different route home, etc.

  • Think of new ways to use everyday items. For example, how many different ways can you think of to use paper clips?

  • Make new things out of things you might throw away.

  • Try out new things that you have never done before.

  • And so many other ideas...

HOMEWORK:

1. Work on your Tool Commercial Project (Due Friday before class).

2. To earn a late pass, choose a way to practice your creativity (not necessarily from the ideas above). Share with me how you are doing it and how you are feeling via Remind app with pictures/videos by Sunday, September 15th.
