*11-17 Online Collaboration Project

1. Genius Hour Project update

As I’m very mindful of the fact that the workload towards the end of the semester in all of your courses will become heavier, I decide to make the video presentation an optional task. The total score for this project is still 15 points, which makes each of the 5 posts worth 3 points (instead of 2.5 points). If you create the video presentation as instructed below, you’ll get a bonus of 2 points. And by sharing your video presentation with me, you also agree to allow me to show it to the whole class, if time permitted.

2. Video Production Project Showcase

Please finish this form of Self-Assessment and Peer Assessment, after you complete the project.

3. Discussion of the Q sort results

Last week we did a Q sort activity. about frustrations in online collaboration. Here are the results:

Q1: My overall online collaboration experiences have been positive (strongly disagree to strongly agree).
Q2: The q sort results shows that there are four distinct types of perspectives (so-called factors) towards different sources of frustration. Your names are ordered based on how typical or representative you are in this group from high to low:
  • Factor 1: Hyungseo Han, Curran Squire, Hope Kaufman, Adrienne, Alyce Burnett, McGregor, Caroline Herrin, Cammie Chavez

  • Factor 21: Alyssa Vanderberg, Madeline Franz, Emma Baumbick, Hallie Brewer, Megan Peterson, Lydia Smith, Abby Nelson, Zaria Hunter, Mary Lenon Bates

  • Factor 22: Emma Honda, Wade Snow, Morgan Beasley, Megan Sanders

  • Factor 3: Max, Zoe Rosenberg, Chloe Chapman, Maddy Steilen, Elisabeth Gowen

Padlet Discussion (See links for each group above):

First, each one of you post your own responses to the following questions. Then share your responses among your group. Be Prepared to give us a summary of your group's discussion.

  • Based on the idealized Q sort (which represents the average perspective of your group), what are the similarities in your group, in terms of collaborative learning?

  • What are the solutions to make collaborative learning a more positive experience to your group?

  • How do you like the Q sort activity? What have you learned from it?

For each group, an idealized Q sort for factor (factor = group) is generated to help you visualize your shared perspective. Locate the idealized Q sort of your group in this Google Folder.

4. Online Collaboration Guidebook (Instructions Document)

You have discussed how to prevent or minimize the frustrations in online collaboration. Now we'll create an "Online Collaboration Guidebook" collaboratively. This guidebook is intended for any teachers (K-12 or higher ed) who are looking for resources to create effective online collaboration activities. There are different subtopics for you to choose from. You’ll work in groups of 2-3 students and you choose your own partners. You may stay with the same group or join a new group.
